U12 Girls (Team Lavigne) With their Championship Plate
The Coaches of the U12 Girls Anchor Division (Team Lavigne) worked very hard with the players during practices to prepare them for each match during the season. All the hard work definitely paid off, as they went through the season unbeaten with an 8-0 record.
So onto the playoff's they went, against South County.
During the SuperLiga Season CSA had 8 Wins with 31 goals for and 6 goals against. South County had 7 Wins 1 Tie with 30 goals for and 5 goals against. South County had also won the State Cup and are going to West Virginia to represent RI in the regional playoffs, so you knew this was going to be a Championship Match like no other with some great goalkeeping by both teams.
Unfortunately, key CSA defensive players Alex Lussier and Natalie Gallucci could not play for the Championship due to injuries sustained during the season. Working hard to minimize this effect on the team, assistant Coaches Mike Dwyer, Justine Lavigne, and Martin Yarumian decided to move Jodie Lavigne back on defense with Sam Dwyer and Caitlyn Bulger. Team Lavigne were now practicing with these formation changes and even though they would only have 1 sub they were ready for anything. Together they were successful in stopping the powerful offensive players from South County.
The whistle blew and both teams showed right away why they were in the Championship Match with the action going back and forth on both ends of the pitch. There was some aggressive play by both teams, with some great first time touches on the ball by Midfielders Taylor Malone and Madisen Kearny, great passing by Sarah Lavigne and Katie Beaudoin and yes; some great shots on goal. The CSA Defense and Goalkeeper Alyssa Derrick were definitely tested with many surges on the CSA goal to which south county had approx 8-10 shots on goal. Just as CSA were tested; so was the South County Team. CSA created some great chances in the final third of the field and finally got the chance they had been looking for when Julia Janikies scored the only goal in the match.
The sportsmanship from all the players and coaches was fitting for the championship Match. Both teams played their hearts out and deserved to win, however; in a Championship Match there has to be a Champion and CSA had the edge and deserved the title of 2010 SuperLiga Champions!
